The Elden Ring is finally here. After a long, agonizing wait and a slight delay, FromSoftware’s next action RPG is coming! It’s probably the biggest and possibly best game in the series, and it’s shaping up to be everything we’ve ever wanted.
When is Elden Ring’s Release Date?
Elden Ring is set to launch on 25 February, 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It was originally expected in January, but FromSoftware announced a short delay in October of 2021.
What is Elden Ring’s Setting?
A new Elden Ring story trailer was shown during The Game Awards 2021, providing more details of the game’s narrative, which was written by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin.
Elden Ring takes place in the realm of the Lands Between, sometime after the destruction of the titular Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards, the Great Runes.
The world of The Lands Between is blessed by the presence of The Elden Ring and by the Erdtree, which symbolizes The Elden Ring’s presence. This has given grace or blessing to the people throughout the land, great and small. The realm is now ruled over by the demigod offspring of Queen Marika the Eternal, each possessing a shard of the Ring that corrupts and taints them with power.
However, after a time, there were some individuals who lost this grace, and the light faded from their eyes. And these are what are known as the Tarnished. Somehow the ancestors of the Tarnished that are present in the world were banished and exiled from The Lands Between, and in a historical event the Elden Ring was shattered. This triggers the return of this lost grace and it calls out to the Tarnished, guiding them back to The Lands Between.
As players, you will have to journey through the realm, collect all the Great Runes, restore the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.
So that’s where the story starts.
Elden Ring Combat Gameplay
Elden Ring is an ambitious evolution of the Dark Souls formula.
Overall Elden Ring is an open-world action/RPG. Although Elden Ring is similar to the Soul Series, the combat will play out very differently due to its open and vast environment which is rich with loot and mini dungeons.
Horseback combat will be presented in the Elden Ring, where you’ll be able to explore a lot of the world on horseback. Mastering the combat will require you to make intelligent use of your Stamina while avoiding enemy attacks. Do remember that healing is scarce in these games, so avoiding or mitigating damage is required, it’s all about how you manage your resources (HP, FP and Stamina).
Summons the spirits of friendly characters will definitely be a huge help in your battle. They’re always located in particular spots, often near boss fights, and Elden Ring’s summon system seems much larger and more freeform. This is highlighted in Elden Ring’s multiplayer feature, so basically you can summon your friends from different worlds to play the game cooperatively, and you can participate in PvP combat through the invasion system.
Elden Ring Open World
As for how the world will be structured, the realm will be split into six distinct areas, each one ruled by a demi-god. As mentioned, each demi-god possesses a piece of the Elden Ring, which the Tarnished (you as the player) is seeking. These areas have more traditional Souls-like areas, including catacombs, caves, and fortresses. A hub area links together every area and you can explore it at will.
In the Open World, you’d better be prepared for lots of trial and error, as well as needless deaths. When you explore its castles, dungeons, catacombs and other enclosed areas, it might be challenging to find every hidden path and shortcut, but if you search carefully, you’ll be able to find everything there is to find.
Remember to look for Sites of Grace (safe points) to guide you (sometimes) the way to the next plot goal but where you go beyond is still up to you. Some mini-dungeons and overland areas require considerably higher levels than their nearby narrative counterparts; others are valuable sources of items and experience, which you’ll need for upcoming plot bosses.
The rune of death was stolen, the demigods began to fall. Starting with Godwyn the Golden, and Queen Marika was driven to the brink. The shattering ensued; a war that wrought only darkness.
